One of my co-workers had a friend with an extra Jeff Mangum ticket literally hours before this past Monday night show and I couldn’t pass up the offer. My heart was beating so hard during the first three songs that I had to catch my breath in an effort to cheer, but what do you expect when Jeff opens with Two Headed Boy Pt. 2, Holland, 1945, and Gardenhead / Leave Me Alone? Positively magical. Heartfelt and totally sincere. I don’t know why, but I wasn’t expecting him to be so adorable and happy. When I went to the My Bloody Valentine reunion show a few years back they were so goddamn miserable. Singing with a few hundred people, “I LOVE YOU JESUS CHRIST, JESUS CHRIST I LOVE YOU YES I DO” was one of the major highlights of the night. And Oh Comely. Which turns out is Jeff’s favorite song to sing, and mine too. Yet another night that I’ll miss forever.
